1975 Porsche 914 Copper Metallic — Museum Collection, Custom Interior, 11,977 Miles
About this vehicle
Jointly developed by Volkswagen and Porsche to replace the entry-level 912, the 914 arrived as a proper mid-engine sports car — lightweight, targa-topped, and built around a low center of gravity. Its body was manufactured by coachbuilder Karmann in Osnabrück, and the standard specification included pop-up retractable headlights and a removable fiberglass-reinforced plastic Targa roof panel. Few examples have a story as specific as this one.

Finished in Copper Metallic (factory paint code L99K, also referenced as VW code 95F), this 1975 914 spent years as part of a private 128-car museum collection assembled by the owner of a national restaurant chain. The bodywork was repainted in the original Copper shade under previous ownership and is reported to remain in very good overall condition. Exterior details are plentiful: fog lights, black front and rear bumpers, black vinyl-covered sail panels, polished dual side mirrors, raised colored PORSCHE lettering along the rocker panels, quad exhaust tips, and a PORSCHE-logo reflector panel spanning the rear between the taillights. The 914 rides on 15" Baby Fuchs alloy wheels wearing tires the seller describes as excellent, with no immediate replacement needed. Targa top seals are reported in excellent condition, with no known water leaks. Additional paint, trim, glass, and wheel details are documented in the gallery.

Inside, the cabin has been fully redone in a style drawing clear inspiration from Porsche's Sonderwunsch tradition of bespoke factory personalization. Custom brown leather covers the seats, door panels, center console, and dashboard, with orange tartan plaid inserts running through the seat centers and trim surfaces. The seller notes the precise upholstery history is unknown — the car was acquired by the collection already in this configuration. Equipment includes a center console with auxiliary instrumentation, a four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, a Porsche-crested gear knob, manual window winders, a heater, and analog VDO gauges. All switches and gauges are reported to function properly, with instrumentation that illuminates brightly at night. A custom-made matching luggage piece featuring Porsche crest and 914 emblems rounds out the interior experience.

Power comes from an upgraded 1.8-liter air/oil-cooled flat-four. The engine was reportedly rebuilt in 2012 at 105,226 miles and breathes through an aftermarket quad-tipped Borla exhaust system. According to the seller, it starts readily and runs strongly. The 5-speed manual transaxle shifts cleanly on both upshifts and downshifts, suspension is described as solid, and steering is said to be tight with no noticeable play. Museum-kept, yes — but the seller is direct about it being a sorted, enjoyable driver. Current indicated mileage stands at 11,977.

Offered following the museum's recent closure on behalf of the late collector's family in Sarasota, FL, the sale includes a custom luggage set, a battery trickle charger, and a clean title. Dealer principal Andrew Hennesey of Hennesey Automotive Group represents the car and is available to answer questions: "Overall, this 914 is very impressive and is well sorted for its new owner. Yes, it was a 'museum' piece, but it's also a car ready to be driven, not just shown."
