About this vehicle

Guards Red over Black leather. Few pairings suit the 928 S4's long, low silhouette quite like that one, and this 1987 example — delivered new through Capitol Import Autos of Milwaukee, Wisconsin — makes a strong case for why. It carries 91,928 miles, arrives with its original window sticker, and comes backed by a service binder stretching into the 1980s. The S4 was Porsche's most thorough reworking of the 928 platform to that point, debuting as a 1987 model year car, and its 4,957 cc DOHC 32-valve V8 puts out 316 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque through a rear-mounted 4-speed automatic transaxle. Placing the gearbox at the rear axle was a deliberate engineering choice: it keeps weight distribution balanced in a way that few grand tourers of that era could genuinely match.

The S4's bodywork is where the story of what Porsche changed becomes readable. Earlier 928s wore bolt-on lip spoilers; the S4 replaced them with a restyled front fascia and a hatch-mounted rear spoiler that read as part of the body rather than additions to it. Revised underbody panelling and sensor-driven radiator cooling flaps fill out the aero package. Pop-up headlights — electrically raised, flush with the front wings — ran through the entire 928 production run and remain a signature element here. Fog lights and a power-operated sunroof are fitted as well. The car rides on 16-inch Design 90 alloy wheels, a flat-disc style introduced specifically for the S4 in 1987, wearing staggered Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires: 225/50 up front and 245/45 at the rear, which are exactly the factory-specified sizes for this wheel fitment. Those wheels were powder-coated in 2022; the tires carry 2021 date codes. A second set of original wheels, powder-coated in 2026, is included and will need new rubber. Under current ownership, paint correction was completed along with targeted repairs and refinishing of the hood, driver's door, side mirrors, passenger-side quarter panel, and rear bumper. The seller reports all original sheet metal is intact, factory VIN identification decals are present, and no dents or scratches are visible.

Black leather covers the power-adjustable front buckets and individual rear seats, and a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of the full gauge cluster. The dashboard was reupholstered in 2023. On board: automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, power mirrors, and a rear window defogger, with audio handled by a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 AM/FM cassette head unit feeding an eight-speaker system. Climate control was serviced in 2020; a replacement air conditioning compressor was fitted and the system converted to R134a refrigerant in 2023, followed by installation of a rebuilt climate control unit and a recharge in 2024. The cruise control module was refurbished in 2022. More recently, the passenger seat adjustment mechanism was repaired and the rear armrest door reupholstered in Black leather. Some scratches are present on various leather surfaces, and the driver's seat outer bolster shows wear.

The engine's maintenance history is both sustained and documented. Timing belt and water pump were replaced in 2015, with another timing belt swap in 2019. Between 2020 and 2023, work included resealing the oil pan, servicing the fuel injectors, refinishing the intake manifold and valve covers, and replacing engine mounts, knock sensors, fuel hoses, power steering lines, spark plugs, the idle air control valve, and the mass airflow sensor. A fuel leak was addressed, and on the drivetrain side, the transmission fluid reservoir and cap, cooler line, and assorted seals were replaced, along with the shifter guide and roller. Center and left exhaust heat shields were renewed. Engine oil was changed in January 2025, and a new aluminum undertray has since been fitted beneath the engine. The seller states all maintenance is current and that the car has lived in a climate-controlled garage throughout their ownership, acquired in April 2025 after prior stints in Michigan and California.

The sale includes the original window sticker, owner's manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a tire inflator, a car cover, a battery trickle charger, the full service record binder, the additional set of powder-coated wheels, and a clean title.
