1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet in Guards Red — Japanese Import with 4-Speed Tiptronic
About this vehicle
Guards Red over Linen leather — this 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet came straight off a transpacific import, originally sold on the Japanese domestic market before arriving in the United States in October 2025. The odometer reads approximately 91k kilometers, or roughly 56k miles. Under the hood sits Porsche's naturally aspirated 3.0-liter DOHC inline-four, paired with a 4-speed Tiptronic automatic transaxle mounted at the rear.

Launched in August 1991 as a 1992 model year car, the 968 succeeded the 944 and its variants, closing out Porsche's long-running family of front-engine, rear-transaxle four-cylinder sports cars — a lineage that began with the 924. The Cabriolet's production path was unlike any other body style in the range: completed coupe shells traveled from Zuffenhausen to ASC's (American Sunroof Corporation) facility in Heilbronn, Germany, where they were converted to open-top configuration, then shipped back to Porsche for final assembly. Removing the fixed roof meant structural reinforcements were added throughout to recover the body rigidity the conversion cost.

This RoW-spec example has been refinished in its original Guards Red and rides on 17" Cup-style wheels with red-painted brake calipers. The power-operated black convertible top functions as expected, and pop-up headlights, integrated fog lights, RoW-spec side marker lights, power-adjustable mirrors, and aftermarket chrome fender accents are all present. Front tires are Pirelli with 2015 date codes; the rears are Firestone units dating to 2000. Per the seller, the repainted exterior carries an orange peel effect in the finish, and detailed gallery images document its extent.

Inside, Linen leather covers the seats and door cards, carried through to Linen carpeting on the floors. A black dashboard, upper door panels, and floor mats provide the contrast. The equipment list covers power-adjustable front seats, air conditioning, power windows, central locking, a digital outside temperature display, an analog clock, and a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel. Held over from the car's Japanese life are an aftermarket Carrozzeria stereo and an electronic toll collection reader. Wear shows on the driver-seat bolster, and the interior rearview mirror is currently detached from the windshield.

The 3.0-liter DOHC inline-four incorporates VarioCam, Porsche's first production variable valve timing system. How it works is straightforward: intake camshaft timing advances above roughly 1,500 rpm, then retards above roughly 5,500 rpm, which broadens the torque and power curve across the rev range. Factory output was rated at 236 horsepower. Drive reaches the rear wheels through a rear-mounted 4-speed Tiptronic transaxle that permits fully automatic operation or driver-selected shifts via the lever. The layout — front-mounted engine connected by a torque tube to the rear-mounted transmission — gives the 968 its near-50:50 front-to-rear weight balance. No prior maintenance or service history is available, per the selling dealer.
