Audi is Permanently Bringing RWD Back to the R8

After over a year of teasing the idea of a non-Quattro edition of the R8, Audi is finally putting its words into action. The 2020 Audi R8 is going to be a rear-wheel-drive model, and it is going to stay that way for good. The RWS portion of the car’s title, of course, will now be changed to RWD. While the RWS was a limited release model of the vehicle, Audi is making the RWD a permanent fixture in its R8 line.

There is not a whole lot that makes the RWD model stand out from the traditional R8, aside from the obvious lack of driveshaft. It is also lighter than its previous Quattro counterpart. The engine, horsepower, and torque still remain remarkably similar and can go from 0-60 in 3.7 with top speeds of nearly 200 mph.

The R8 RWD will be offered in both Coupe and Spyder convertible formats. The exterior will feature the standard front blades, side sill inserts, and glossy black or carbon diffusers. As usual, it is a tail-happy model that shows off black side blades and bottom blades that blend in with the rest of the vehicle.

An extra benefit of this model is that it will be cheaper than the Quattro version. So far, only German pricing has been released, but the R8 RWD is already being listed as roughly 22,000 euros less expensive than its Quattro counterparts. This model is going to be released in Europe in early 2020, and as of right now, an American release has not yet been confirmed. It will most likely find its way overseas eventually, but hopefully, the wait won’t be too long.
