About this vehicle

Kenny Kizewski picked this Fastback up in Parker, Colorado, back in May 1990 — his first Type 3 — and spent the better part of the next decade turning it from a stock daily driver into a full-bore show car. Several Colorado specialists had a hand in that transformation: Randy Bowen of Sportcar Service, American Classics of Alamosa, and Johnny's Auto Trim. The finished product earned coverage in Dune Buggies and Hot VWs magazine, took first in class at its debut show, then Best of Show at the Rocky Mountain Motorworks show in August 2000, and a runner-up finish at Bandimere Speedway. Since then, a Porsche master technician has kept it sorted, stored in a climate-controlled facility.

American Classics handled all the bodywork, laying a two-stage Porsche Guards Red finish with clearcoat over a thoroughly smoothed shell. Factory door handles, hood trim, emblems, and other exterior details were shaved, the doors converted to solenoid-operated latches. Polished Briz ribbed aluminum bumpers replace the originals. Billet windshield wipers and billet side-view mirrors keep the exterior clean without fuss, and Weld wheels wrapped in Michelin tires finish off the stance. After paint, Sportcar Service handled reassembly, detailing the undercarriage and engine bay to the same standard as the body above.

John Martin of Johnny's Auto Trim built the interior from red leather and tweed upholstery, adding one-off door panels and a custom headliner. The dash carries a limited-production Billet Machine Products "Streetwise" insert loaded with VDO instrumentation and indicator lights. Up front there's a LeCarra steering wheel and a Berg shifter, power windows have been fitted, and chrome-plated trim runs throughout the cabin. The Alpine audio system pairs a CD head unit with a 250-watt amplifier tucked under the front hood, component speakers in the kick panels, and a 10-inch subwoofer in a custom enclosure.

Randy Bowen of Sportcar Service in Colorado Springs built the engine. It's a Type 3 flat-four bored from 1,600cc to 1,776cc, built around a counterweighted 69mm DMS crankshaft, rebuilt and balanced factory connecting rods, and 90.5mm Cima pistons fitted with Mahle rings. The Engle 110 camshaft works with 041 dual-port cylinder heads carrying SCAT rocker shafts and Manley stainless-steel valves — 40mm intake, 35.5mm exhaust. Compression is 8.0:1, fed through dual 34mm Weber ICT carburetors, with a Bosch 009 distributor managing ignition. Exhaust runs through an HPC-coated Berg system with dual quiet packs. A 200mm flywheel, Sachs clutch assembly, stock Type 3 oil cooler, and powder-coated engine tin round things out, with fully balanced internals throughout. Drive goes through a 4.12:1 swing-axle 4-speed manual transaxle — gear ratios of 3.80, 2.06, 1.26, and 0.89 first through fourth — with swing axles reported sourced from a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle.

The sale includes the featured issue of Dune Buggies and Hot VWs, owner's manuals, a toolkit, and a clean, clear, in-hand title. Mileage since the build stands at 700.
