The automatic transmission position switch or PNP gear indicator switch on your Volvo tells the power train control module when your vehicle is in park or neutral to start the vehicle, and what gear has been selected by the driver to drive. If the automatic transmission position sensor fails, the power train control module will not be able to accurately know when your Volvo is in park or neutral, preventing you from being able to start your Volvo. Additionally, if it fails and you can start your Volvo, the power train control module may not be able to determine which drive gear is selected, locking your Volvo in limp mode, and only allowing your Volvo to drive up 20mph to get it home. The Volvo 8636441 automatic transmission position switch used on the 2001-2004- Volvo S60, 2004-2006 Volvo S80, 2001-2007 Volvo V70, and 2003-2007 Volvo XC70 the is located at the top of the transmission and can easily be replaced in about 30 minutes by removing the air intake box to access it.
