Your Volvo purge valve or canister shutoff valve is the control valve for the vehicle’s evaporative emissions system, preventing your Volvo from leaking fuel vapor. As fuel vapor builds up in the fuel tank, it is vented into a charcoal canister where it is trapped by the purge valve. When your Volvo’s engine is running the purge valve opens, allowing the trapped fuel vapor to flow into the engine intake manifold, where it mixes with air entering the engine as it is burned off during combustion. If your Volvo purge valve fails, the evaporative emission system can leak fuel vapor and engine vacuum causing your Volvo to fail emissions, have a rough idle, and poor engine performance.
